3.24.2006
From Paul, Colorado Spring, CO:

Hi, I just want to thank you for the information. My nephew John David Knott was murdered by Gary L. Hill, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and now a murderer walks free. I and many others are so in grief– there was no justice for John whatsoever. I think it was because a dead man can’t really speak to tell the truth. The “Make My Day Law” enables unjust murder. It’s no better than an act of terrorism in this country.   Thank you for listening, and continue your good work.

3.14.2006
From Rene Thompson, Covington, KY:

“Everyone understands wanting to protect yourself from people who attack you but that’s not good enough for the Kentucky legislature (and the NRA who gives them their allowance).

They want you to be able to legally kill someone you think may attack you, might want to steal your car, hit you last week, heck, they want to give you the right to shoot the damned kids that cut through your garden. And the police can’t arrest you and the family of the deceased can’t sue you. All you have to say to murder legally in Kentucky would be, ‘I felt threatened.’”

It's Not a Movie. It's the Law.
The NRA is working to pass a law that makes murder legal in the United States. It's been called the "Shoot First," "Make My Day," or "Deadly Force" law, but call it what you want, it's a License to Murder. That's because instead of requiring anyone who feels threatened to retreat when possible, it allows them to fire at will, regardless of the consequences. One killer has already been set free, and other criminals and their lawyers are already drooling at the thought of using the NRA's "Shoot First" law as a legal defense.

"Shoot First" is dangerous and unnecessary. It's a license to murder, and, if the NRA has its way, it's coming soon to a state near you..

According to the Register-Herald Reporter in West Virginia on April 10th, 2008:

CHARLESTON — Lifetime National Rifle Association member Joe Manchin ceremoniously signed West Virginia’s version of the Castle Doctrine with a blunt warning Thursday to would-be home invaders.

“Don’t mess with us,” the governor cautioned while signing the bill backed strongly by the NRA in its national campaign to put such laws on the books in all 50 states.

For two years running, retiring Sen. Shirley Love, D-Fayette, pushed the measure, varieties of which are law in 20 other states.

NRA pushing License to Murder in Ohio now.  If that law had passed there, this man (who shot a teenager for walking across his lawn) would be free instead of spending life in prison)

5.10.2007

Texas legislators pass License to Murder even as, 30 miles away, a community fights the guns that killed a 7-year-old boy.  At the same time we should be making it harder to kill, the NRA is trying to make it easier.

4.30.2007

This gun bill would encourage violent confrontations.  “Let’s just call it a license to kill.”

4.5.2007

The NRA is pushing for License to Murder again in many states around the country.  What you can do?  Take a moment to sign the statement against License to Murder, and afterwards you’ll have a chance to tell your friends about this important issue.

3.16.2007

The Bismarch Tribune in North Dakota:  There’s no need to have a law like this, and even if there were, encouraging violence is not the way to go about it.

2.19.2007

In Texas, where self defense is already a way of life, the NRA is pushing gun owners even further, asking them to use violence as a first option, not just a last resort.

2.15.2007

Texas District Attorney says NRA’s License to Murder law is “a dangerous thing.”  “You’ve heard these stories about somebody walking into the wrong door, knocking on the wrong door … or, what if the police came to your house, and you didn’t hear them knocking? You’d shoot them.“  The DA said you could add firemen and mailmen to the category of professionals at risk of being wrongfully shot.  “Before we go changing anything, you have to ask, ‘Do we have a problem?’”

Jury Rules License to Murder Killer Guilty, but it’s not over yet– just because this jury ignored this law, it’s still on the books, waiting as a loophole for murderers.

8.29.2006

Harsh words about the License to Murder Law from a Judge in Kentucky:

A Fayette judge struggled to make sense of Kentucky’s new “home intruder” law yesterday, calling the National Rifle Association-backed legislation confusing, vague and poorly written.

Arizona “License to Murder Killer’s” Defense Backed By the NRA: Harold Fish killed an unarmed homeless man.  Under License to Murder, he would go free, but because LtM hasn’t passed in Arizona yet, the NRA has to bankroll his defense.  More commentary about this on GunGuys.com.
