January 27,2012
Director: Asger Leth
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Studio: Di Bonaventura Pictures

If you’ve seen the Man on a Ledge trailer, you’re in on the whole game. Hell, if you’ve seen the dozen or so movies and TV shows from which the Asger Leth directed, Pablo F. Fenjves scripted movie has been calculatedly stitched; you’ll be way ahead of it every step of the way.

The movie certainly starts off as good, goofy, dunderheaded fun. Expressionless Sam Worthington plays a wrongly accused ex-cop and ex-con who climbs onto the ledge outside his 21st-story room in a midtown Manhattan hotel window seemingly intent on meeting his maker and the pavement. While the entire city apparently comes to a standstill, NYPD-negotiator-with-troubled-past Elizabeth Banks begins to sniff out, long after we have, that Worthington may not be a leaper but someone else entirely.

Trading tedious and clichéd bad TV-level banter with Banks, like “How far would you go to get back at a man who took everything from you?” Worthington resorts to slipping (or faking it), which works as a cheap thrill once but pales after too many attempts at milking it. Stalling for time, he yells “I’m an innocent man!” to the crowds massed below and even tosses them a fortune in cash, which could be the only possible reason for them not to yell, “So, jump already!” – as any sensible moviegoer is bound to do.

Meanwhile, Kyra Sedgwick seems in on the joke as a hard ass TV news reporter live on the scene, Edward Burns sleepwalks through his role as a burned-out NYPD burnout and Jamie Bell and his hugely annoying girlfriend Genesis Rodriguez keep in constant communication with the ledge man as they argue their way through an apparently air-tight security system to perform the kind of daring heist we’ve seen too many times.

Dog Day Afternoon, Rififi, Law & Order, Tower Heist – this movie ticks so many well-worn boxes, that by its contrived, messed-up last third, you may find yourself glassy-eyed. But, hey, if you find yourself seriously starved for dumb entertainment this weekend, may as well jump.

The fourth night into Demetri Martin’s latest comedy tour, Telling Jokes in Cold Places, lands him aptly enough in Montreal, Canada. Picture the North Pole—that’s about how much it’s snowing outside. It’s the city’s first blizzard of the year; but despite the whiteout, Montreal’s Theatre Maisonneuve, with a capacity of almost 1,500, is packed. Theatre Maisonneuve is the place you go with your aunt, where the cheap seats start at fifty bucks and it smells like Chanel No. 5 and butterscotch candies.

Martin, who as well as starring in two seasons of his own TV show, Important Things, films like Taking Woodstock and Contagion and penning This is a Book, tends to draw a more Gen Y than Gen X university following. The audience, pre-show, mills around in jeans and pilly scarves under the lighting of crystal chandeliers. The effect: shabby-chic gets its glee on.

Demetri Martin, 38-year-old law school drop-out turned comedian, turns up onstage in a black hoodie, jeans and brand-new sneakers. He opens his act with a request for crowd shout outs. The first comment he gets is a query about his his alterna-shiny hair. The ‘do is a distinctive element of his look—it’s a sensitive-guy-from-a-70s-flick style bowl haircut.

“How’d you get your hair so shiny?” a lady yells from the middle balcony.

“I just wash it! Maybe it’s the lights,” he says.

In the Steven Wright vein of stand up, Martin is known for his sardonic one-liners. He throws a few of these out about the paperwork at the American/Canadian border (“Next time I’ll touch a cow and shoot it…”) and about tossing out some cheeseburger farts around first class on the plane (“Smells like coach…”). He strides back and forth along the edge of the theater’s purple-lit stage (“Don’t want to alienate the ladies with gruff, manly lights…”) and shoots out a couple of barely traceable obscenities.

The humor’s exactly what the audience wants from him. It’s acerbic, smart, and generally above-board. There’s no belligerence here. Martin paces himself well and his deadpan is all the funnier because of his easy demeanor. He has the ability to generate a feeling of intimacy that is remarkable, particularly given the vast, formal context of the theater. A girl in the crowd says to her boyfriend, “I think he made eye-contact with me!”

Martin gets laughs by using the props he’s become famous for: Sharpie-etched sketches, some folksy guitar strumming broken by intervals of harmonica and running commentary on the humor of the quotidian. Like how trying to figure out how to get the paper towels out of an automatic dispenser makes you look like a boob, “Using lasers to get paper is solving a problem that didn’t exist. You just look like a shitty magician, waving your hands.”

When his 90 minutes are up, Martin takes his bow and walks off stage. The crowd applauds until he steps out again, and gives them what they want: an encore.

President Barack Obama delivered his third State of the Union Address last night, a speech many pundits predicted would be the launching pad for his re-election campaign but that proved to be an optimistic, rhetoric laden blueprint for the future of America. It touched on the many issues facing Americans today: job creation, tax reform, education and sustainable energy. It was a speech hailed as hopeful but not without its trepidations and reprimands. Obama chided both sides of Congress for their stagnant insistence on partisan lines and he did not shy away from the idea of class warfare. The speech was not without its shots at his Republican challengers –this is after all an election year- but for the most part it was a populist, bipartisan program aimed at restoring faith in the American economy and the political process, regardless of political ties.

Here are the highlights:

On the War on Terror: “For the first time in nine years, there are no Americans fighting in Iraq. For the first time in two decades, Osama bin Laden is not a threat to this country.”

On the Economy: “We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules.”

On Bailouts: “Millions of Americans who work hard and play by the rules every day deserve a Government and a financial system that do the same. It’s time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody.”

On Job Creation: “In the last 22 months, businesses have created more than three million jobs. Last year, they created the most jobs since 2005…I want to cut through the maze of confusing training programs, so that from now on, people have one program, one website, and one place to go for all the information and help they need. It’s time to turn our unemployment system into a reemployment system that puts people to work.”

On Outsourcing: “It’s time to stop rewarding businesses that ship jobs overseas, and start rewarding companies that create jobs right here in America.”

On Tax Reform: “Washington should stop subsidizing millionaires. Tax reform should follow the Buffett rule: If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 percent in taxes. On the other hand, if you make under $250,000 a year, like 98 percent of American families, your taxes shouldn’t go up.”

On Education: “Congress needs to stop the interest rates on student loans from doubling in July. Extend the tuition tax credit we started that saves middle-class families thousands of dollars. And give more young people the chance to earn their way through college by doubling the number of work-study jobs in the next five years.”

On Immigration Reform: “Let’s at least agree to stop expelling responsible young people who want to staff our labs, start new businesses, and defend this country.”

On American Energy: “This country needs an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy – a strategy that’s cleaner, cheaper, and full of new jobs. Experts believe this will support more than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade. And I’m requiring all companies that drill for gas on public lands to disclose the chemicals they use. America will develop this resource without putting the health and safety of our citizens at risk.”

On Housing: “I’m sending this Congress a plan that gives every responsible homeowner the chance to save about $3,000 a year on their mortgage, by refinancing at historically low interest rates.”

On the State of Politics: “I’ve talked tonight about the deficit of trust between Main Street and Wall Street. But the divide between this city and the rest of the country is at least as bad – and it seems to get worse every year…We need to end the notion that the two parties must be locked in a perpetual campaign of mutual destruction; that politics is about clinging to rigid ideologies instead of building consensus around common sense ideas.”

Only Joke of the Night: “We got rid of one rule from 40 years ago that could have forced some dairy farmers to spend $10,000 a year proving that they could contain a spill – because milk was somehow classified as an oil. With a rule like that, I guess it was worth crying over spilled milk.”
